Doula

DOULA SERVICES

In June 2019 I attended a Doula Preparation Course with Mars Lord of Abuela Doula, and will be offering both birth and postnatal doula services from the Autumn of 2019.

I feel this is a natural progression as it allows me to support parents before, during and after birth.  It's something I have been planning to do for a while, once my own children were a little more independent and I felt ready to move into my next phase and I am incredibly excited about the new adventures and relationships that this will bring.

Birth and pregnancy have become something of a passion for me in the last few years.  I have felt unbelievably fulfilled providing birthing people and their partners with the information they need to help them during labour, and then hearing their stories afterwards.  But there has always been a sense of sadness that, for me, the story stops there.  Especially when I have had a really strong connection with a family, or I know that they would be keen for more support.  So I am looking forward to being involved in more of the journey for some of the parents I teach.

I chose to undertake the Abuela Doula course because I felt it was important to be able to work in a way which was culturally aware and culturally safe, as well as understanding more about the history of birth work throughout the world.  Doulas are not just for one type of person, or one type of birth, and there should be a doula to fit every family.  I enjoyed being able to explore more about birth traditions and historical wisdom, both in my own culture and those of the other doulas.

I understand that hiring a doula can feel daunting.  Not only is it a very close intimate relationship inviting someone outside of your family to attend the birth of your baby, it can feel like a lot of money to spend and a huge decision deciding who to engage.  I want to make sure that you feel fully comfortable with me, and am happy to chat with you on the phone or in person for an informal chat over coffee.

I can offer payment plans for those on a low income and I am always happy to consider alternative payments such as service for service payments.
